Reflections on a year in the General Assembly

by on Jan.02, 2013, under Freedom, Liberty, North Carolina

As time in Raleigh draws to a close a year after my appointment to the NC Senate, I find myself reflecting on three primary thoughts.

First, my confidence in North Carolina’s government is greater today than it was when I took office. I am struck by the caliber of individuals who serve on both sides of the isle. Most work for a living, many are small business owners; none are getting rich on the $13,951 salary. With few exceptions, these individuals sought office for the right reasons, and genuinely pursue what they believe to be in the best interest of North Carolina, even if their ideology is different from mine.

The leadership in both houses, from committee chairs to President Pro-Tempore Phil Berger and Rules Chairman Tom Apodaca in the Senate, and Speaker Thom Tillis and Rules Chair Tim Moore in the House, keep both chambers on an efficient schedule. They effectively guide positive legislation through both bodies. North Carolina has generally chosen well in her elected officials.

Second, the bureaucracy is worse than I imagined possible. I have sat through numerous committee meetings in which the asininity of the (continue reading…)

In his own words…

by on Jul.12, 2011, under National

With this statement today, the President outlined the moral argument regarding the debt ceiling debate, in fact succinctly explained his philosophy on the Constitution and Capitalism:

“… I will not accept, a deal in which I am asked to do nothing, in fact, I’m able to keep (continue reading…)

Change you can count on…

by on Aug.05, 2009, under National, North Carolina

In 2008, America voted for CHANGE. How’s that change working out for you?

Last night, I attend a GOOOH meeting. Granted, I did not stay for the entire meeting, but I have some concerns about their objective. Their stated mission is to replace all 435 members of the US Congress.

This is a grass-roots, relatively conservative group- and I support their intent, as I do the 9-12 Project and the tea-parties. The objective is change. The question I have is: (continue reading…)

O’er the Land of the Free?

by on Jul.06, 2009, under National

As I stood for the National Anthem at a salute to veterans this weekend the question at the end of the first verse struck me in an unusual way, “…does the Star Spangled Banner yet wave, o’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?”

I have always though it appropriate that our National Anthem ended in a question, because in a free society the question always presents itself- shall we be free tomorrow? This question will always be with us, because freedom requires the action of the people.

Many sing without hearing the words thus they do not realize that ours is the only national song that ends with such a question. Those who do know that the final stanza answers the question, and assume as I traditionally have, the answer to be yes. But this day in 2009, I must admit that a lump rose in my throat as the song ended… it is difficult today to say that the banner does indeed wave over the land of the free.

Freedom can be defined simply as the lack of the physical coercion of another. This of course does not mean that the rights of your neighbor do not limit what you can do; he has the right to defend his property. But, to be free, he may not force you to (continue reading…)

Talk about nail on the head…

by on Jul.01, 2009, under National

Though I have tried, Thomas Sowell hit the nail squarely on the head in the article below, far better than I have been able to.

The GOP is the only party that can lead, but the GOP cannot continue to offer alternative “solutions” that are only different versions of those presented from the other side; we must stand for something- we must stand for the Constitution, for the Individual, for Capitalism.

Anything less will ensure that the other side remains in control, and America continues a spiral into European Socialism.

Take a moment to read Sowell’s column, and let me know what you think…
