There was a good article in the Observer today by George Will, http://www.charlotteobserver.com/406/story/620066.html. There is nothing here that you don’t already know, but it is a good summary of the path that our nation is on.

I was asked last week, why I had an interest in politics. I think this article by Will suggests why we all should have an interest in politics- and be more motivated than ever before to be active. I am hopeful that the action being taken by the Liberty Tea Parties, Glenn Beck 9/12 Project and other grassroots movements (including a growing conservative movement within the GOP) will continue to build momentum for a legitimate nationwide debate on the role of government in the lives of each American; or at least the responsibility of the individual to question it.

Our system is not broken as was suggested to me recently; rather the guardians of the system have not followed through in protecting our rights. Patrick Henry reminds us, “The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government — lest it come to dominate our lives and interests.” And, Jefferson’s words resound today, as few times in our history: “What country before ever existed a century & a half without a rebellion? & what country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon & pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots & tyrants. It is its natural manure.”

Former Democrat Senator Max Cleland spoke at Gardner-Webb University last night, and stated that the Chinese character for “crisis” was actually composed of 2 different characters- the first was “disaster” the second was “opportunity”. As we live and work under the current administration- and the disaster it is bringing to Capitalism, we must focus on the opportunity the disaster presents­-an opportunity to unite as conservatives, to revive the GOP with a consistent, conservative message, and to hold our elected officials accountable for their votes.

Let us step forward as the guardians of the worst system of government devised by mankind (except for all the others), and reclaim our rights as individuals to self-governance.
